Two-thirds of Van Drivers Consider Buying New Van Before VAT Increase Says Swinton

    Market Wire, July, 2010

Two-thirds of UK van drivers are considering purchasing a new van before the VAT increase, according to Swinton Vans.

The online poll of 1,200 van insurance customers revealed 67% of van drivers are considering saving cash by buying a van before the VAT rate increases to 20% on 4th January 2011.

The VAT increase, announced in the recent emergency budget, will see the average price for a new Ford Transit rise from GBP 20,157 to GBP 20,586 – an increase of GBP 429.

A 1% increase in Insurance Premium Tax also means van drivers will be paying more tax on their annual insurance policy from January.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said: “Van drivers who are self-employed or run small businesses are likely to be hit hard by the VAT increase as they’ll need to pass these costs onto their customers, unlike big organisations, which can absorb these additional costs. Potential customers may decide to put off spending once the rise kicks in January 2011, which could cause a knock-on effect on trade levels. They will however benefit from the small companies tax rate cut which will be lowered to 20% from April 2011 onwards.”

“The other good news for self-employed van drivers is that no additional increase in fuel duty was announced at the emergency budget, although the increase in the VAT rate will mean petrol prices will rise from January regardless.”

Margo added, “Luckily, after that I kept myself from retching, or I might have made it worse. I felt increasing but very vague pain in my stomach, but not necessarily in the area I knew my pouch resided. I went back to liquids only, and that did not help, either. This lead to the Upper GI.”

Fortunately she was early enough post-op on a limited liquid and soft food diet that she did not experience peritonitis, inflammation of the abdominal organs due to bacteria from the intestinal gastric contents.

After the fistula was identified Margo was put on IV feeding and her weight loss has stopped.

    Computer tax angers TCM

Calling a 6 percent computer service tax recently enacted during the Maryland General Assembly’s special session “outrageous,” the Tech Council of Maryland, the state’s largest technology trade association, served notice that it will hold town hall meetings and lobby legislators to vigorously oppose the imposition of the tax. The TCM said the industry was given virtually no opportunity to be heard about the effects of the tax on services like computer facilities management, custom computer programming, computer system planning, software and communication technologies, computer disaster recovery, hardware or software installation, and computer maintenance and repair.

The awards, which were recommended by the Maryland Wine and Grape Promotion Council, will be used for marketing, research, advertising, retail/festival promotions, activities that promote the growing of wine grapes and educational seminars.

    Buzz from WeatherBug

WeatherBug, of Germantown, which operates the country’s largest weather network, said it has integrated the storm-based warnings format recently launched by the National Weather Service into its consumer and professional product offerings. These are geographically specific warnings for time-sensitive alerts, such as severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flood warnings, which are tailored to only warn that portion of the population in the storm’s path. WeatherBug is one of the first commercial weather providers to fully integrate the latest NWS warnings into all of its products, officials said.

Just call me the Michelin Man after my five-star feast in Tokyo! Robert Mayes expands his mind – and his waistline – dining out in the world’s new gourmet capital

0 Comments | Mail on Sunday (London, England), The, June 13, 2010

    Byline: Robert Mayes

At five foot nothing in his rubber boots, Mr Furokawa is not an imposing man. But when he unsheathes his knife, the crowd of onlookers takes a collective breath – and a step back.

His helpers struggle to manoeuvre the vast slab of flesh into position. As soon as it is in place, Mr Furokawa raises the long, arcing knife – like some kind of samurai in overalls – and begins to carve mighty slices of glistening, precious ruby meat.

Not the kind of thing you’ll see popping up on your local Yo Sushi conveyor belt.

But then this is Tsukiji, the biggest fish market in the world, where Mr Furokawa has just spent the equivalent of [euro]20,000 on a fish. Of course, this fish is no ordinary fish. It is a blue-fin tuna so huge it takes four men to shift it, and the meat taken from its belly – called ‘toro’ – is bound for the best restaurants in Japan.

Every morning before daybreak, Mr Furokawa joins thousands of dealers in a labyrinth of warehouses the combined area of five football pitches to trade tonnes of seafood worth tens of million of euros.

Tuna makes up the bulk of the trade, brought fresh and frozen from around the world. That morning’s auction was a melee of men in boots barking bids over row upon row of these gleaming giants of the sea, where 250kg behemoths can sell for upwards of an eye-watering [euro]40,000.

Bleary-eyed but bushy-tailed, we had met our guide Naoto Nakamura at 4am, and after a visit to the fishermen’s local Shinto shrine, we plunged into a frenzy of fish.

Truth be told, we weren’t actually allowed into the tuna auction, as the authorities have stopped tours due to safety concerns, ie too many gawping tourists with cameras. But Naoto, who used to work at the market, gave us the insider’s tour, guiding us expertly from room to room, dodging government officials, fish guts and the silent army of one-man delivery trollies that came at us from every angle.

To intermittent gasps of horror from my vegetarian companion, we passed through auction rooms which made the average Wall Street trading floor look like a library, winced at men clubbing die-hard strugglers and stepped gingerly around trays of fugu, or blowfish, a delicacy whose poison can kill a man in 24 hours – and requires chefs to train for years to be able to cook it without diners dropping off like flies.

And all this before breakfast. I had never contemplated sushi for my petit dejeuner

The Journal of the American Medical Association reported on the 4th April that the level of overweight American children was 33.6%. Obese children grow into obese adults. They do not lose this so called ?puppy fat? unless positive steps are taken. They have a significantly higher risk of developing serious health problems , both now and as an adult, including potentially life threatening conditions such as bowel cancer, diabetes, strokes, heart conditions and high blood pressure. The more overweight the child, the greater the risk.

There are also psychological problems to consider. Overweight and obese children frequently experience playground teasing about their appearance which can destroy self esteem and confidence, and lead to isolation and depression. This can last for the rest of their lives, and often leads to such children taking up smoking and drinking alcohol at an early age.

It is predicted by health experts that due to our children?s poor diet and lack of exercise their own parents will be outliving them. This is a scary thought, is it not.

You can offer your property or car as collateral .With collateral debt consolidation loans carry a lower rate of interest and have flexible repayment terms .So you can increase your convenience but there is a certain degree of risk involved regarding the collateral. But without collateral debt consolidation loans carry a higher rate of interest and a longer tenure.

You can apply for these loans online where many lenders are willing to offer you debt consolidation loans at competitive rates. You just need to fill up an online application form. And the rest is assured.

We all take debts to increase our convenience and our spending power. But if our debt becomes a cause of worry to us then it is of no use.

Visa controls failed to protect UK border -watchdog

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Jul 27, 2010 | by Anonymous

VISA CONTROLS for applicants from Pakistan who want to settle in the UK failed to protect the UK’s border, a watchdog said today.

The UK Border Agency’s independent chief inspector found that in the worst cases visas that should have been refused were granted, with a “significant number” of cases not being decided correctly.

John Vine said the investigation into the handling of Pakistan settlement applications found “serious organisational failings” in the UK visa section and “a lack of rigorous scrutiny being applied to those who wished to settle in the UK”.

The UK Border Agency “failed to fully meet both key strategic objectives of protecting the UK border and making fast and fair decisions”, he said.

“In the worst cases, I found that visas that should have been refused were granted and visas that should have been granted were refused.”

Pakistan is the third largest source of applications to enter the UK, the report said
